Abstract
1,249,228. Erecting flat folded, rectangular cartons. JACOB WHITE & CO. Ltd. 6 Jan., 1970 [22 Jan., 1969], No. 3568/69. Heading B8C. In a method of erecting flat folded, rectangular cartons, Fig. 1B, which are of the folded-top-opening type and each of which comprises side walls 5-7 with end flaps, not shown, and a top flap 8 with a tongue 9 which is insertable into an envelope 9a formed by a flap 10 glued to the wall 5, the lowermost of a series of cartons, stacked on their side walls 6, 7 in a magazine 11, is picked-off by suction cups 14 on a take-off member 13 and moved transversely so that the carton wall 7 cooperates with a breaker bar 16 to substantially erect the carton. At the same time a retaining arm 21, connected to the member 13 by a spring-loaded telescopic arm 24, 26 is moved obliquely so that its foot 22 abuts the top flap 8 and maintains its tongue 9 engaged in the envelope 9a while the carton is being erected. The member 13, carton 15 and foot 22 continue their simultaneous movement until the carton is fully erected and finally deformed in the opposite direction slightly over top-dead-centre. The take-off member 13 is further withdrawn against the action of the springs 23 on the arm 24, 26 as the lowermost of a pair of rollers 20 on the retaining arm 31 bottoms in a guide slot 19 and the carton is separated from the member 13. The carton is then moved by a conveyer flight bar 30 beneath the break bar 16 and through the apparatus. The slot 19 is formed in a bracket 18 carried by the magazine 11.
