Abstract

1,249,198. Terephthalic acid. MITSUI PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 30 Jan., 1969 [31 Jan., 1968], No. 5123/69. Heading C2C. Terephthalic acid is prepared by the liquid phase oxidation of p-xylene with molecular oxygen or molecular oxygen-containing gas at a temperature of 150‹ to 200‹ C. and a pressure of 3 to 15 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>g. in the presence of a catalyst comprising cobalt, manganese and bromine characterized in that (i) the amount of manganese is from 2 x 10<SP>-7</SP> to less than 1 x 10<SP>-5</SP> gram-atom per gram of acetic acid, (ii) the amount of bromine is in the range 5 x 10<SP>-6</SP> to 5 x 10<SP>-5</SP> gram-atom per gram of acetic acid, (iii) the atomic ratio of cobalt to manganese (Co/Mn) is from 1 to 100. The cobalt and manganese may be present as one or more of their acetates, bromides, carbonates, naphthenates or acetylacetonates; the bromine may be present as one or more of hydrobromic acid, hydrogen, sodium, potassium, ammonium, manganese or cobalt bromides, methyl benzyl bromide, bromoacetic acid or tetrabromoethane.
