A relay responsive to current in a single conductor 7 has a sealed magnetic reed contact unit (Fig. 1, not shown) within a non-magnetic housing 1 between two ferromagnetic elements 3, 4 which are adjustable to set the flux concentration in the space between them. Fig. 3 shows an alternative arrangement with tubular ferromagnetic elements 9, 10 with the contact unit 11 surrounded by a non-magnetic member 12. Contact chatter may be reduced if the housing 1 is made of conducting material such as copper or if the housing is provided with a copper sleeve or shroud (not shown). Alternatively, the member 12 may be the smoothing conductor and the housing 1 omitted.
