In a method of making high-strength steel wire by cold drawing, the wire is given an intermediate spheroidization anneal. A rolled steel wire is uncoiled, cold drawn 60-80% reduction in section and passed to a wire accumulator, after which it is heated by induction or an electric current and rapidly cooled when it has reached the spheroidization temperature to form a spheroidized pearlite structure. After cooling, the wire is led into a second accumulator whereupon the steps of cold drawing, annealing and rapid cooling may be repeated at least once. After the final cooling step, the wire is further cold drawn and recoiled. The wire may be annealed in the coiled state.
