Abstract
1415552 Treating magnetic alloys WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 6 Jan 1973 [22 Feb 1972] 2178/73 Heading C7A [Also in Divisions B3A and H1N] A remanent magnetic reed for a sealed magnetic reed contact device in which the remanent alloy contains (by weight) 40 to 75 parts cobalt iron to total 100 parts cobalt and iron and 1-5 parts vanadium based on 100 parts of cobalt, iron and vanadium, is made in a process including the steps of hot working, quenching cold working and phase precipitation hardening comprising annealing for from ¢ to 6 hours in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at 550 to 670C to provide the reed with remanent magnetization of at least 10,000 gauss and a coercivity of 10 oersteds. The complete series of operations may be (1) preparation of a melt of the alloy at about 1550C for 1 or 2 minutes before cooling, (2) hot working at between 900 and 1250C (rolling, swaying or extrusion), (3) softening by heating to at least 750C and quenching in less than 1 minute (preferably in ice brine) (4) cold working to a desired dimension followed by steps 5, which is a strand annealing process to produce a wire having a tensile strength of 200,000 p.s.c. and a minimum elongation of 10% during maintainance at 850 to 1050C for at least 5 seconds before cooling in a reducing atmosphere. Step 6 is a stamping operation giving a 40% thickness reduction before the phase precipitation (step 7).
