Abstract
1,248,417. Lift cages. A. A. L. L. HOUILLE, and J. L. A. SEE. 2 Dec., 1968 [1 Dec., 1967], No. 57062/68. Heading B8L. In the event of a power failure, a lift cage 1 is lowered relative to the hoist cable 13 by a lazy-tongs linkage 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 11, extension of which is effected by the weight of the cage and controlled by an hydraulic damper 14, 15. Fig. 5 shows an embodiment in which a safety lever 16, operated by a ram 18, holds the linkage in the closed position in the event of an hydraulic failure. To lower the cage distributer 27 is operated to connect ducts 30, 31 and 32. This lowers the pressure in chamber 24 of the ram 18 below that in the chamber 23 thus moving the lever 16 clockwise to the disengaged position. When the piston of the ram 18 has moved far enough to connect a duct 35 to the chamber 23 the damper 14 begins to discharge liquid to the tank 33 and the lazy-tongs linkage extends lowering the cage. When the cage is eventually lowered on to its stops the linkage is re-folded by its own weight and the pressure in the tank 33. The tank 33 may comprise a piston and cylinder arranged below the cage such that lowering of the cage to the bottom of the shaft compresses the piston into the cylinder and returns the damper 14 and ram 18 to their original positions.
