[Also in Division H4P] In type-printing telegraphic apparatus, the transmitter is provided with the conventional alphanumeric keyboard and a numerical keyboard. Only one keyboard is operable at a time, the other being locked by an electromagnetically operated universal locking bar (131, Fig. 2). The numerical keyboard is associated with a mechanism for tabulating from the right which comprises means for entering numeric character code combinations into an accumulator, of the kind described in Specification 1,178,569 (see Division H4), a control member which commands the transmission of the stored code combinations from the accumulator to a teleprinter (Fig. 1), and means for automatically transmitting a "back space" code combination to the teleprinter, but not to the accumulator, each time a numeric character code combination is entered into the accumulator when a numeral key of the numeral keyboard is depressed. When the complete number has been composed, release key (214, Fig. 2) is depressed thus commanding the reading and therefore the transmission of the code combinations contained in the accumulator. These code combinations are transformed from parallel to serial form, as described in Specification 1,178,569, and transmitted to the teleprinter which prints in normal fashion arriving at the right hand margin from whence it started. The mechanism for generating a "back space" code combination automatically, without entering it in the accumulator, comprises a bail 147 fast with a fixed shaft 149, Fig. 7, and provided with a profile 151 having a succession of teeth 152 and gaps 153 corresponding to the "back space" code combination. The teeth and gaps are sensed by the projections 154 of a series of sensing elements 156 pivoted on a bar 157 carried by a frame 158. In operation, a rocking lever 179 shifts the frame 158 upwardly together with the sensing elements 156. If a projection 154 encounters a tooth 152, the sensing element 156 acts by means of a projection 173 on an arm (174, Fig. 8), bringing a lever (63), into one of two positions. If, on the other hand a gap 153 is encountered, the lever (63) moves to the other of two positions. The transmission bars (58) are thus positioned selectively together with sliders (62, Fig. 5). The wedges carried by the sliders (62) are sensed as described in Specification 1,159,835 (see Division H4) to provide the "back space" code combination in serial form, which is then transmitted to the teleprinter.
