Abstract
1,247,501. Ion pumps. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 23 Feb., 1970 [27 March, 1969], No. 8671/70. Heading H1D. An electron-orbiting ion-getter vacuum pump includes means for injecting electrons into the space between a housing 12 and a grid 22 surrounding an anode 18 including getter material 20, and means 28 and 29 for maintaining independent electrostatic fields between the housing 12 and the grid 22 and anode 18 respectively. The means for injecting electrons may be an electron gun 31 or two filaments (50), (Fig. 3, not shown) mounted on the bottom of the housing 12. The electron gun 31 comprises a removable filament 33, focusing cup 35 and anode 37 mounted on a bellows 46 enabling the gun to be retracted into a housing 34 through an opening 40 which is closed by the head 48 of a valve 41 when renewing the filament. The housing 34 is exhausted through a valve 42 before opening the valve 41. A further modification comprises omitting the focusing cup 35 and anode 37 from the electron gun 31, leaving the filament 33 which is advanced into the housing 12 to form the source of electrons. The housing 12 is surrounded by tubing 45 for circulation of a coolant, and may be closed by a grid 16. Insulating bushings 19 and 23 for the anode and grid lead and an insulator 24 supporting the grid 22 are protected from vaporized getter material, e.g. Ti, by shields 44, 25 and 27.
