A method of locatably positioning pre-set cutting tools in a machine tool, such as a lathe, which has a cross-slide and a turret comprises the steps of establishing a datum plane transversely of the machine tool, bringing a surface of the turret or part 332 mounted thereon to the datum plane, positioning a datum surface transfer member 322 with a transfer surface thereof lying on the datum surface of the turret or part 332, adjusting tool locating means 300 on the cross-slide to engage the transfer surface of the transfer member and positioning a pre-set cross-slide cutting tool on the cross-slide at a predetermined distance from the locating means. The cutting tool is pre-set in a jig as described in Specification 1,246,796.
