Abstract

1,246,148. Bulking multi-filament yarn. HERCULES Inc. 9 Oct., 1968 [10 Oct., 1967], No. 47950/68. Heading D1F. Apparatus for bulking multi-filament yarns of thermoplastic material comprises a jet body 8 having a bulking chamber 14 open at one end and nozzle means 13 opening into the chamber 14 at the opposite end, the jet body 8 being mounted adjacent an endless screen 3 and the yarn Y being fed at a rate substantially greater than the speed of movement of the screen; the apparatus also comprises means directing the yarn into the nozzle 13 and means 30 supplying a bulking fluid to the nozzle 13 for advancing the yarn endwise into the chamber 14 and for plasticising the yarn, the mounting means providing for movement of the jet body 8 towards and away from the screen against means biassing it towards the screen, the jet body being located sufficiently close to the screen to prevent the exhaust of the bulking fluid between the open end of the body and the screen to confine the exhaust to the area of the screen opposite the open end, the yarn being deposited in a ribbon BY on the screen 3 and compacted between the latter and the jet body during advance of the screen. A nozzle 15 is provided for guiding the yarn Y to the nozzle 13, the tip 17 of the nozzle being tapered to accurately align the nozzle 15 with the nozzle 13. Since the exhaust of bulking fluid is confined to a specific area of the screen, the fluid jet is deflected laterally as the buildup of filaments at one location of that area diminishes the exhaust at that location, the filaments are therefore deposited in a random manner in the bulking chamber. The dimensions of the bulking chamber and distance between the jet body and the screen are chosen to provide a bulked yarn without looped or fused filaments. In a preferred embodiment, a 3200 denier 210 filament polypropylene yarn is bulked using steam as the fluid in a bulking chamber having a laterial dimension of .25 inch and a depth of .25 inch. The nozzle 13 being .093 inch in diameter and the jet body being spaced from the screen by a distance less than .01 inch and biassed towards the screen by a force between 2 and 8 pounds. The bulking chamber 14 may be cylindrical or may have a square cross-section.
