Abstract

1,246,082. Extruding; welding by pressure. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 9 Sept., 1968 [8 Sept., 1967], No. 41248/67. Headings B3P and B3R. A clamping arrangement for clamping a billet 1 being cyclically fed into the pressure chamber 6 of a hydrostatic extrusion apparatus comprises clamping jaws 4 and a segmented tube 7 to separate the jaws from the chamber by a distance l 1 so that when the high pressure in the chamber is greater than the yield stress of the billet the stress in the billet is below the yield stress at the region of the jaws. The segments Figs. 4a-4h (not shown), are moved either by the hydrostatic pressure or independent hydraulic or mechanical means into engagement with the billet. The segments are moved apart after the extrusion to release the billet and allow the billet to be fed into the chamber. The end of each billet is pressure welded to the leading end of the next billet in the tube 7. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, the billet 34 is clamped by jaws 33 which are applied by opposed plungers 35. The tube 31 is segmented and fitted within a rubber sleeve 32 acted upon externally by the hydrostatic pressure.
