124,558. Dehn, F. B., (American Laundry Machinery Co.). March 23, 1918. Calendering.-A finishing-press for ironing fabrics has opposed pressing-members and opposed conveying and finishing aprons each having a yielding body and a coating forming a smooth finishing-surface for engaging the fabric under pressure exerted progressively by the pressing- members. As shown, the aprons comprise a body 37, Fig. 4, of duck or other yielding material and a smooth coating 38 of starchy material, such as potato or rice starch. The pressing- members comprise hollow heated rollers 4, 11, Fig. 5, and steam-heated beds 7, 12, the radius of curvature of the beds being greater than the radius of the rollers so that there is substantially a line contact between them. The roller 4 and the bed 12 are adapted to be forced towards the bed 7 and the roller 11 by means of rods 46, 18 connected to eccentrics on a hand-controlled shaft 39. The fabric is passed through the machine between endless adjustable aprons 22, 27, the finished goods being removed by a driven endless apron 33.
