Abstract

1,245,565. Envelope shaping apparatus. WURLITZER CO. 24 March, 1970 [26 March, 1969], No. 14256/70. Heading G5J. [Also in Division H1] A piezo transducer 22 is impulsively excited by a hammer 14 in a piano-type action, and the voltage so produced causes a capacitor 62 to be charged, the latter discharging through resistor 60 alone when damper contact 28 is open giving profile 82, or through resistors 60 and 64 when the contact 28 is closed giving profile 86, the resulting signal being used to provide an envelope for oscillations from the generator 68. The loudness of the sound produced is thus dependent on the pressure on the key (10), Fig. 1 (not shown), and the damper contact 28 is opened when the key (10) is depressed, giving a sustaining effect. The capacitor 62 is charged via a Darlington pair 54, 56, normally cut-off. The time constants of the discharge circuit are varied with pitch, to imitate the damping characteristics of a piano. The piezo transducer (22), Fig. 3 (not shown), is a disc of barium titanate, with silvered faces (36, 38) and is mounted on a metallic rail (20), Fig. 2 (not shown), by a plastics stud 24 resiliently held by clip 48, or by an integral rubber stud (24a), Fig. 5 (not shown). The hammer 14 strikes the head of the stud, and in the latter case, lateral spreading of the head (44a) gives increased voltage output. The damper base (26), Fig. 1 (not shown), may be fixed to, or integral with the rail (20).
