Abstract

1,245,280. Towelling material. KIMBERLYCLARK CORP. 25 Oct., 1968 [9 Nov., 1967], No. 50868/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B6] A towelling material 1 is made by applying an adhesive 14 to a creped, drawn cellulosic web 2, preferably in discrete zones to cover 3-5% of the surface, embossing a second web 4 in a nip 18 formed by a hand roll embossing roll 19 and a soft impression roll 17, carrying the webs to a nip 20 defined by the embossing roll 19 and a second impression roll 21 and thereby embossing the pattern of the roll 19 into the superposed coils which are united in the nip 20 and carried away by rolls 22, 23. The application of the adhesive may be achieved by a Mount Hope roll 11 which spreads the web 2 and supplies it, e.g. at an angle of 0-30 degrees, to an intaglio roll 13 which rotates at a speed slower than the lineal speed of web 2 so that the web wipes adhesive from roll 13 in longitudinally spaced strips. The webs may have a basis weight of 10-16 lb. per 2880 sq. ft. and may contain wet strength resins such as melamine or urea formaldehydes. The impression rolls have a Shore Durometer A value of 25-40. The adhesive may be polyvinyl alcohol.
