Abstract

1,245,209. Charging furnaces. NIPPON KOKAN K.K. 8 May, 1970 [9 May, 1969 (4)], No. 22456/70. Heading F4B. Blast or vacuum furnace charging apparatus comprises four superposed hoppers 1a, 2a, 3a and 5, each provided with a selectively operable closure bell 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively, the upper hopper 5 being rotatable. Upper and lower bells 4 and 1 act merely to evenly distribute the charge from a conveyer fed shoot 50, but the bells 2 and 3 form gas-tight seals (Fig. 2A, not shown) with rubber edged C-sectioned members at the base of their associated hoppers 2a and 3a. The space within hopper 3a is always vented to atmosphere. In operation, bells 3 and 4 are opened to pass the charge into chamber 102 above bell 2 and then closed. Chamber 102 which was at atmospheric pressure is then brought to the furnace pressure and bell 2 opened to deposit the charge in chamber 101 above bell 1. Bell 2 is then closed and bell 1 opened to pass the charge into the furnace. The bells 2 and 4 are provided with shrouds to protect against abrasion due to the falling charge material.
