Abstract

1,244,850. Electrolysis of aqueous alkali metal chloride. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 17, 1968 [Nov. 6, 1967], No. 50329/67. Heading C7B. An aqueous solution of an alkali metal chloride is electrolyzed (e.g. to produce chlorine, hypochlorite or chlorate) using a cell wherein the anode comprises a "titanium support" and an electrodeposited coating thereon of an alloy of Pt with at least one of the metals Cu, Fe, Sn, Hg, Zn, Cd, Co and Ni. "Titanium support" means a support consisting of Ti alone or an alloy based on Ti and having anodic polarization properties similar to those of Ti. Examples of suitable Ti alloys are Ti with Zr, Pt, Rh, Ir, Nb or Ta. An anode can be made by etching a Ti sheet in HCl and then electrodepositing Pt/Cu or Pt/Hg thereon, the electrodeposition baths containing chlorplatinic acid, HCl and hydrazine hydrochloride together with cupric chloride or mercuric chloride.
