Abstract

1,242,816. I. C. engine fuel systems; ignition systems. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. April 9, 1970 [April 21, 1969], No.16971/70. Heading F1B. In an I. C. engine fuel system the operation of a reversible fuel pump connected between the engine and a fuel reservoir is controlled by a switch so that on actuation of the switch to operate the engine the pump supplies fuel thereto and on actuation of the switch to stop the engine the pump withdraws fuel therefrom. Operation: When engine 12 is stopped and ignition switch 20 is in the "OFF" position the pump 18 does not transfer fuel. When switch 20 is in the "START" position the battery 30 energizes the engine starter and relays 44, 68. The energization of relay 44 closes contacts 46, 50 to cause the pump 18 to transfer fuel to the engine. The energization of relay 68 opens contact 78 to disconnect engine accessory loads and closes contacts 72, 80 to permit energization of the pump via lead 64 at battery voltage by by-passing resistor 40 and to supply ignition energy to coil 84 by by-passing resistor 86. When the engine starts and the switch 20 is placed in the "ON" position contacts 78 are closed to connect the engine accessories to battery 30 and opens contacts 72, 80 to permit energization of the motor 26 and coil 84 through resistors 40, 86 and a switch 42 responsive to the operation of the engine e.g. responsive to oil or coolant pressure or engine speed. Relay 68 gives a delayed release to maintain contacts 72, 80 closed until switch 42 closes. When the switch 20 is in the "OFF" position the relay 44 is de-energized thereby reversing the polarity of the pump motor and causing it to transfer fuel from the engine to the reservoir and the engine continues to operate until it runs out of fuel since the ignition network 82 is still energized by switch 42. Should the engine stall prior to the switch 20 being placed in the "OFF" position the switch 42 opens de-energizing the motor and ignition circuits to stop transfer of fuel thereby allowing the engine to be restarted without having to wait until the pump has refilled the carburetter. The pump may be replaced by a fluid driven pump and an engine controller utilizing fluid valves may replace the ignition switch.
