Abstract

1,242,380. Freeze-drying. LEYBOLDHERAEUS - VERWALTUNG G.m.b.H. 20 July, 1970 [23 July, 1969], No. 35132/70. Heading F4G. Freeze-drying apparatus comprises a vacuum chamber 1 in which receptacles 33 for holding the material to be freeze-dried are slidably mounted on rails 31 and are located between heat radiators 2. The material is loaded into the receptacles 33 outside the chamber 1 which are then slid into the chamber 1 which is then sealed and evacuated. Equipment (not shown) then freezes the material in the receptacles 33 and a heating medium is then supplied to the radiators 2 through an inlet 21. Vapour from the material passes through the openings in the receptacle sides (35), Fig. 4 (not shown), and into condensers (not shown) in the chamber 1. When freeze-dried the material may be allowed to absorb some moisture either in the chamber 1 or in a separate air lock adjoining the chamber 1 separated therefrom by a valve. After the vapour charging is completed the receptacles 33 are pushed out of the air lock and, while still suspended vertically, are emptied by swing- ing both of each receptacles sides about a hinge (38), Fig. 6 (not shown). Spikes (39). Fig. 7 (not shown) may be provided on interior of the receptacles sides to prevent fibrous material e.g. tobacco, from packing down inside the receptacle 33, or if fine particulate material is used, solid side panels provided with louvred venting openings may be used.
