Abstract

1,241,571. Hypodermic syringes. D. SLOME. 2 April, 1969 [8 April, 1968; 11 Sept., 1968], Nos. 16774/68 and 43115/68. Heading A5R. A hypodermic syringe comprises a barrel 3, a needle 8, a protective cover 2 engageable over the barrel 3 and first and second puncturable containers 21 and 11 housed in the cover 2. The containers 21 and 11 contain fluidizing medium and a fluidizable medicament or drug respectively. The position of the barrel 3 within the cover is limited by a detachable split collar 19 and a spring clip 20 engageable in a circumferential groove formed in the surface of the barrel 3. With such an arrangement the barrel 3 is locatable in three different positions within the cover 2; the needle 8 may lie adjacent the first container 21 or may have punctured the first container 21 or may have punctured the second container 11. In an alternative arrangement for limiting the position of the barrel 3 in the cover 2, the barrel is formed with two diametrically opposed lateral shoulders and the cover is formed with two diametrically opposed longitudinal extensions which in one relative rotary positions of the barrel and cover are engaged by the shoulders to retain the needle adjacent the first container and in another relative rotary position the lateral shoulders pass between the aforesaid extensions to allow needle to puncture the first container. Further means are provided to prevent the needle prematurely puncturing the second container. The syringe needle 8 has an outer tubular needlelike covering member (22, Figure 2) freely surrounding the needle and shorter in length than the needle. Such an arrangement allows the passage of sterile air, contained in the cover 2, to be drawn up past the needle 8 and into the containers 21 or 11 during the withdrawal of their contents into the barrel 3.
