[Also in Divisions C4 and G2] Novel pyrazolo-[1,5-a]benzimidazoles of the formula in which X represents hydrogen, halogen, sulpho, sulphonate or an arylazo group, R represents a C 1 _ 20 aliphatic hydrocarbon group substituted in the position α- or #- to the carbonyl group by a sulpho, sulphonate or -COOR 5 group (where R 5 is hydrogen or a C 1 _ 18 alkyl. group) or a group of the formula (where R 6 and R 7 are hydrogen or C 1 _ 18 alkyl groups) and R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are each hydrogen, halogen, C 1 _ 4 alkyl, C 1 _ 4 alkoxy, aryl, sulpho, sulphonate, sulpho, sulphonamido, -NHCOR<SP>1</SP> or -COOR<SP>1</SP> groups, R<SP>1</SP> having the meanings given above for R, are prepared by heating a pyrazolone of the formula with an acid ZCOOH, where Z is hydrogen or C 1 _ 3 alkyl, and, if desired, introducing the appropriate substituent into the 4-position of the resulting compound. The pyrazolobenzimidazoles are used as colour couplers (see Division G2).
