Abstract

[Also in Division G4] In apparatus for determining the position of the centre of gravity and/or weight of an aircraft supported by its three wheels, a load gauge is provided at each support for converting the load at each support into a respective resistance, the resistances being provided in an analogue circuit. The circuit includes a negative feedback operational amplifier provided with an input resistance and a feedback resistance, which resistances are determined by the value of the resistances given by the load gauges. As shown, the centre of gravity is G 1 and the distance l 3 may be determined by using an analogue circuit in which the feedback resistance R H 2 is given by a load potentiometer at one of the main landing wheels, and the input resistance R H1 + R H2 is given by the series of another load potentiometer at this landing wheel and a load potentiometer at the other main landing wheel. The output voltage U l3 is then proportional to the distance l 3 for a fixed input voltage Ul 4 which is proportional to l 4 , as can be seen by comparison with the corresponding "moments of force" diagram in Fig.5. In a similar manner, the distance l 1 may be determined, Fig.4 (not shown). The total weight of the aircraft is determined by using a series of three load potentiometers i.e. one at each of the wheels, as the feedback resistance, the input resistance being a fixed resistor R. The position of the centre of gravity may be determined from any suitable point of reference. The two measurements of the position of the centre of gravity and the measurement of the total weight may be carried out simultaneously by using three amplifiers and the appropriate number of load gauges or may be carried out consecutively using one amplifier and a relay or electronic switch.
