Abstract

1,240,705. Photographic light-sensitive materials and physical developer. EASTMAN KODAK CO. July 12, 1968 [July 13, 1967], No.33316/68. Heading G2C. A photographic light-sensitive material comprises a support bearing a radiation-sensitive palladium compound which after exposure can be physically developed and which is present in an amount in itself insufficient to form a visible palladium image. Compounds specified include palladium oxalate and co-ordination complexes of palladium such as K 2 PdCl 4 , K 2 Pd (oxalate) 2 and Pd(NH 3 ) 4 Cl 2 and complexes of PdCl 2 with organic compounds such as styrene, tributylphosphine, 1-naphthol, benzylamine, 2:2<SP>1</SP>-bipyridine, salicylaldoxime and 2-aminoethanol, The palladium compound may be absorbed in the support or may be coated thereon in a binder such as gelatine, polyvinyl alcohol, a cellulose ether ester or an addition copolymer containing hydroxy groups and an thranilate groups such as copoly (vinyl alcohol-vinyl anthranilate-vinyl succinate). The physical developers for the material contain a heavy metal salt e.g. of Ni, Co, Fe, Cu, Cr, Pd, Pt, Ag or Au; a reducing agent for the heavy metal ion, e.g. formaldehyde, water-soluble hypophosphites, hydrosulphites and borohydrides, borane amines and hydrazine; and a complexing agent for the heavy metal ion, e.g. NH 4 Cl, aspartic, malic, citric or glycolic acids, sodium or potassium citrate, glycolate or succinate or potassium sodium tartrate. The developer may also contain a complexing agent for palladium ions such as gluconic acid, saccharic acid and quinic acid and water-soluble salts thereof, and a minor amount of stannous ions may also be present. After exposure, the light-sensitive palladium material may in certain cases be washed to remove unexposed palladium compound and then immersed in the physical developer bath to obtain a visible image. Alternatively the exposed material may be brought into contact with a receiving sheet containing physical developer solution and heated to promote migration of unexposed palladium compound to the receiving sheet where it is developed. The light-sensitive palladium material may be used to prepare lithographic printing plates by developing heavily using an ink-receptive heavy metal or to make printed circuits using a non-conductive support and a heavy metal such as Cu, Fe, or Ni.
