Abstract

1,240,700. Coating apparatus. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Oct. 17, 1968 [Oct. 23, 1967], No.49381/68. Heading C7F. Coating apparatus comprises means 14 for depositing material on objects, means 8 for holding said objects, a radially projecting flange 6, means supporting said flange for rotation about its axis, means 10 for rotating said flange, a plurality of spaced arbors 7 disposed about and rotatably supported by said flange, said holding means 8 being connected to and rotatable with said arbors 7, a sprocket 17 Fig. 3, attached to each of said arbors 7 so as to be rotatable therewith, a stationary sprocket 18 Fig. 3 coaxial with said flange 6, and a drive chain 19, Fig. 3 connecting sprocket 18 to each of the sprockets 17 on arbors 7, the arrangement being such that said objects pass said depositing means 14 whilst rotating with said arbors 7 'about the axes thereof. In the apparatus shown, razor blades are placed in stacks on bayonet assemblies and are coated by sputtering with Cr from targets 14, the razor blades turning through 180 degrees per revolution of 6 thus presenting both cutting edges for coating. Other coating materials may be used, e. g. W, quartz and hydrocarbons, and the coating may also be applied by spraying.
