Abstract

[Also in Division G1] In a safety device for use in driving a motor vehicle, a high resistance wire 4, i.e. of the order of 100 K #, is mounted on the steering wheel 1 in the form of a plurality of loops coaxial with the steering wheel, and is connected to a circuit for providing an alarm when the current in the wire drops below a predetermined value. In use the wire is shunted by the driver's hands, relaxation in the driver's muscles, due to fatigue, causing a change of conductivity of the hands and thus a drop in current through the wire. As shown, the wire 4 forms one arm of a bridge circuit, and when the current in this arm AB of the circuit drops below a predetermined value (set by rheostat Rh), a transistor T 1 conducts and causes a transistor T 3 to conduct and trigger the alarm V 1 which may be visual or acoustic. Application of a finger to the wire is sufficient to stop the alarm. A further reduction of the current may cause the vehicle braking system to be actuated. Alternatively, if the current remains low for a sufficient period of time after triggering of the first signal, the engine ignition may be cut or the brakes actuated.
