Abstract

1,240,506. Motor vehicle suspensions; transmissions. W. L. HILL. 18 Nov., 1969 [18 Dec., 1968], No. 60092/68. Headings B7D and B7H. In a motor vehicle suspension comprising a pair of suspension arms 1, 23 each attached at one end to one of a pair of road wheels 68, 69 and at the other to a torsion bar spring 31, 59 means are provided for fixing the torsion bar springs relative to the vehicle frame or body at a variable point along their length so that the spring rate is variable and for varying the angle between each suspension arm and the horizontal when the suspension is in equilibrium so as to adjust the suspension height. A channel member 24 mounted on the frame so as to be vertically movable to vary the suspension height by turning handles 25, 50 acts as an anchorage for levers 27, 48 which are movable longitudinally of the torsion bar springs 31, 59 by turning handwheels 27, 48 on threaded rods 45. Each lever is connected to the torsion bar spring 31, 59 by means of a second lever 28, 48 which provides for the torque in the spring to be released to allow movement of the levers 27, 48 by releasing a locking arm 33, 70 and turning a handle 29, 47. The wheels 68, 69 are driven from a propeller shaft 30 through a differential assembly 12 having non-perpendicular bevel gearing, helical gear assemblies 60, 61, and extended non- coaxial half shafts 2, 64 each having two universal joints 3, 15, 10, 22 and a splined joint 11, 14.
