Abstract

1,240,272. Vacuum induction furnaces. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. 11 Oct., 1968 [13 Oct., 1967], No. 48222/68. Heading F4B. An hydraulically tiltable vacuum induction furnace for degassing steel, in which the melt flows through the secondary channels of one or more inductors (21, Fig. 1, not shown), detachably secured to the furnace bottom, comprises upper and lower sections 11, 12 gas-tightly secured together, and a gas-tight cover 13 provided with a hopper for adding solid alloying constituents through a valve 14a and evacuation and pressurized gas supply lines (not shown). On completion of degassing, melt is discharged through channel 17, to which a discharge spout 18 may be detachably secured in place of the usual closure plate 20, by the pressure of argon gas supplied above the melt surface. The furnace may also be tilted to the right. Protective gas supplied through porous plug 27 prevents reabsorption of harmful gases in the channel 17. The furnace is subsequently moved clear of the stationary cover 13 by being tilted to the left, and slag and metal residues are discharged through the thus uncovered top aperture around which a refractory slag runner (not shown) is attached. After scraping of slag deposits from the walls, and spray repairing of the hearth lining 12, a fresh charge of melt is added through the uncovered top aperture. All connections between detachable parts may be liquid-cooled and coated with magnesium chromite, to prevent the parts sintering together in use.
