Abstract

1,240,091. Timing ignition. FORD MOTOR Co. Ltd. Jan. 6, 1970, No.551/70. Heading F1B. In a spark advance/retard device, a rod 13 is movable to advance or retard the spark, a first diaphragm 7 is fixed to the rod and forms a wall of a first chamber 17, the first chamber is subject to the pressure in the induction system adjacent to the engine throttle valve (not shown) a movable stop 23 is movable between first and second positions to control the limits of axial movement of the rod, there is a second diaphragm 8 to which the movable stop 23 is fixed and the second diaphragm forms a wall of a second chamber 3 and is subject to the pressure in the induction system downstream of the throttle. Each of the diaphragms is resiliently biased to urge them in the opposite direction to that in which they are respectively urged by a vacuum in their respective chambers and a one piece annular spacer 5 is located between the diaphrams to hold the diaphrams in contact with the walls of their respective chambers. The spacer also acts as or carries abutments to limit movement of the movable stop and circumferentially separated parts of the spacer have radially inwardly projecting and axially spaced sections 37a, 37b that constitute abutments and form with projections on the stop a bayonet type joint.
