Abstract

1,239,206. Testing cigarettes. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. and D. W. MOLINS. 10 Oct, 1968, No. 46375/67. Heading A2C. Wrapped rod-like articles such as cigarettes are tested for leaks in the wrapping by passing the articles 4 successively endwise through a test chamber 1 having an inlet 2 and an outlet 3 for the articles 4 and which communicates with means tending to maintain the air pressure in the chamber 1 different from atmospheric, e.g. via a port 7, and at a moment during its travel when an article 4 obturates in the inlet 2 and outlet 3 simultaneously and at the same moment at least one of the ends of the article 4 communicates with atmosphere, the air pressure in the chamber 1 is detected to indicate air flow through the article wrapping between the interior thereof and the test chamber. Preferably the pressure maintained in the chamber 1 is less than atmospheric pressure.
