Abstract

1,238,644. Steering wheels. CLIFFORD COVERING CO. Ltd. 24 June, 1968 [26 June, 1967], No. 29341/67. Heading B7J. [Also in Division H1] A vehicle steering wheel comprises a frame formed of a hub 20, spokes 21 and a rim 22 and a covering of soft resilient material 23 e.g. foamed polyurethane, over the whole of the frame, incorporating a closed thin-walled flexible tube 24 containing air or liquid, the tube being connected to a fluid pressure operated electric switch 25 for a horn circuit, whereby application of pressure to a part of the covering overlying the tube causes actuation of the switch. In modifications the tube may also be incorporated in the rim portion of the covering or in that portion alone. Also only the rim may be covered in which ease the tube is connected by a pair of light metal tubes running under one spoke 21 and connected to the switch 25. Instead of being connected to a fluid pressure operated switch the tube may contain flexible electrical contacts which are brought together on application of pressure to the covering.
