Abstract
1,238,042. Controlling endothermic catalytic reactions. ANTAR PETROLES DE L'ATLANTIQUE. 20 June, 1968 [22 June, 1967], No. 29458/68. Heading B1X. [Also in Division C5] A process for conducting endothermic catalytic reactions in elongated reactors while compensating ambient heat losses consists essentially of passing the reaction stream into an elongated confined reaction path having at least one catalyst zone, dividing the exterior of said elongated confined reaction path into a plurality of separate zones, each of said separate zones having an independently controlled electrical or radiant heating means adapted to supply variable amounts of heat to the exterior of said elongated confined reaction path to heat said reaction stream, at least one temperature sensing means located in said reaction stream in each of said plurality of separate zones each of said temperature sensing means being in co-operation with each of said heating means and controlling the heat output of said heating means, whereby the temperature of said reaction stream is maintained within predetermined limits during its passage through said elongated confined reaction path. The heating means may comprise electrical resistance wires wound around each zone, or radiant heating means. Additional internal heating by means of hot gases may also be supplied. In a preferred embodiment zones of inert material, inert material plus catalyst, and pure catalyst, separated by empty zones, may be used. The process is described with application to the catalytic reforming of hydrocarbons.
