Abstract

<PICT:1084502/C6-C7/1> Metal strip or wire is blued in a furnace 16 provided with three rows of opposed transverse elongated infrared heating elements 24, 25, 26 between which the strips travels, means being provided to control the speed of the strip and the heat output of the elements to heat successive parts of the strip to a predetermined temperature. Water cooled parabolic reflectors 27 are provided around the outer heating elements, to reflect heat towards the strip. Additional longitudinally aligned elements 28, 29, 30 may be used to heat the edges of the strip. Preferably the strip is run at a constant speed through the furnace the heat output being varied by varying the number of elements in use through a 19 position selector (Fig. 3). The strip is fed to the furnace from a slitter (11) through edge dressing means (14) and after passing through the furnace is coiled on constant tension recoilers (19).
