Abstract
1,237,548. Open end spinning. E. BOBKOWICZ and A. J. BOBKOWICZ. 14 Aug., 1968 [20 Nov., 1967], No. 38791/68. Heading DID. In open end spinning of yarn the material supply of staple fibres is fed into a plurality of cavities formed at the nip of the rotating, peripherally grooved, drums 9, 10 where each groove 18 of one drum faces a corresponding groove 19 of the other drum, such that the material forms an open end, fibrous strand within each cavity, and then a twisting torque is applied to the strands to form spun yarn which is wound into a package 88. A polymer substrate may be extruded in the form of round filaments or flat strips into the cavities from extruder 2 and within the cavity mixes with the fibres. The grooves of the drums are perforated so as to be under the action of suction devices 24, 25 within the drum. Cutting rolls 14, 15 with cutters 40, 41 divide the incoming webs 12, 13 of loosely held together staple fibres into strips, providing one for each groove. The torque is imparted by any false twisting device 77, while the strand is continuously pulled downwardly by the wind up arrangement 11. To aid in the consolidation and formation of the yarn it may be passed through a narrowing groove 79 of a condensing, heated, member 82 and subsequently through the groove 81 of a cooled member 84. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the fibre supply arrangement consists of two aerodynamic fibre web forming devices. The surfaces of the drums may be cooled for yarn stabalization.
