Abstract

[Also in Divisions A3, B2 and D1] Sheet material suitable for use as a shoe upper comprises a consolidated mat of interpenetrated crimped continuous filaments bonded together with a resinous or elastomeric binding agent. Suitable continuous filaments are nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, polyacrylonitrile, polyolefine, rayon and silk and suitable binding agents are polyurethane rubber, natural rubber, rubbery styrene-butadiene copolymers, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, polychloroprene rubber and polyolefines such as polyethylene. The mat is produced by laying the crimped continuous filaments under tension and subsequently releasing the tension and may include staple fibres, e.g. polypropylene staple fibres, needled to one side of the mat. The consolidated mat may have a layer of rubber coated woven fabric attached to one side. The woven fabric may be rayon, cotton or nylon and the rubber coating may be a cast film or may be a microporous coating produced from an emulsion of a silicone oil with a rubber latex and vulcanizing agent, the mixture being gelled and heated to effect vulcanization of the rubber under conditions such that escape of water from the gelled mixture is substantially prevented. The consolidated mat may have a surface layer of a compressed cellular sheet material or a surface layer of a compressed cellular sheet material attached to a woven fabric, the compressed sheet being remote from the mat. Suitable cellular materials are reticulated polyurethane foams, natural rubber foams and polyvinyl chloride foams which have been compressed under heat and pressure or in the presence of an adhesive. The layers forming the completed sheet material may be bonded together with adhesives such as natural rubber latex, styrene-butadiene latex modified with a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin or polyurethanes.
