Abstract

[Also in Divisions G2-G3] An electrostatic charging apparatus for producing a uniform electrostatic charge on a photo-conductively coated surface comprises a needle 6 within a cylindrical body 4 of insulating plastics material and energized through a conductor 8a connected to an 8-10 kv. D.C. source (12), Fig. 1 (not shown). Corona discharge emitted by the needle 6 passes through a circular opening 9 in a removable closure plate 7 to produce on a photoconductively coated surface 10 a charged strip of the required height of a character to be produced. The charged strip is then subjected to profiled light beams to produce latent electrostatic charges in the form of characters. The opening 9 may be oval, star-shaped or square instead of circular. The plate 7 may have convex or concave faces to produce a desired field. An incorrectly recorded latent image can be corrected by pulsing the high tension voltage or by applying a control potential to electrodes on the plate 7 and/or the body 4.
