Abstract

1,233,611. Valves. WHESSOE Ltd. 20 Feb., 1969 [19 March, 1968], No. 13317/68. Heading F2V. [Also in Division G3] Valve particularly for filling liquid tanker vehicles from below, is held open by a latch released by a mechanically biased diaphragm 13 to allow the valve to close in response to a control pressure set up when a desired liquid level is reached. In the form shown with the biasing spring 16 above the diaphragm, the space on this side is connected to a U-pipe just below the filling level and also to a low-pressure source such as a suction pump or a Venturi in the inlet. When the level is reached, the L.P. source becomes effective to lift a sleeve 14 and release balls 18 from a latching pin 12 connected to the valve stem 28. The valve member comprises a closure 7 and piston 9 adjustably secured to the stem 28. The diaphragm is fixed between inner and outer bonnets 1, 2. In a first alternative, with the biasing spring 16 below the diaphragm, the space below is connected to a Venturi just below the filling level, to produce a low pressure, this Venturi being at the end of a pipe connected to the inlet. Rise of pressure on flooding of the Venturi allows the latch to release. In a second alternative, also with the biasing spring below the diaphragm, a positive pressure above the diaphragm is developed by a stream bled from the inlet and directed as a jet into an orifice just below the liquid level and connected to the passage 19, the action of the jet being interrupted by flooding. The latch may also be tripped manually or by a solenoid or other device, through a pull rod 17. The valve is opened initially by a cam 11.
