An adjustable bed which may have a hingedly mounted backrest 3 is provided with a cylinder and piston unit 6a, 6 disposed on a chassis 8 at each end of the bed; the cylinder and piston units being articulatedly connected to the bed frame and chassis. The chassis may include a pair of transverse support members 9 and 9a between which a longitudinal member 8 is connected. The head-end of the bed preferably has two cylinder and piston units which are spaced apart, the foot-end of the bed being provided with one unit which is connected to one end of the transverse member 8, the other end of which is connected to the mid-point of transverse member 9.
