Turning-gear.-The fly-wheel has a part d mounted loosely on the crank-shaft a and a part c fixed to the crank-shaft, the part d being coupled to the part c after being set in rotation by an electric or other starting-motor. In one form, Fig. 1, the loose part d of the fly-wheel is rotatable in ball-bearings e on the fixed part c. The two parts are normally held in engagement by an axially movable spring-pressed clutch ring f. At starting, the ring f is disengaged by pedal-controlled rollers m, the part d is driven through a friction wheel k, and the ring f is allowed to reengage the part c when sufficient speed is attained. The pedal which controls the ring f may also switch the starting-motor on and off, and may be automatically locked in its depressed position until released by a centrifugal device when the speed of the fly-wheel is sufficient. In a modification, the part d is belt-driven, and the clutch ring is L-shaped in section and engages the face of the part c. In another modification, the rollers m act directly on the edge of the loose part d, which is normally held in engagement with the part c by springs encircling pins on a ball-bearing member slidable on the hub of the part c.
