Abstract

1,232,235. Extruding. MANNESMANN A.G. 10 May, 1968 [12 May, 1967], No. 22214/68 Heading B3P. A lubricant coating on the surface of an extruded metal product is removed by spraying the surface with a liquid or gaseous medium. The medium may be compressed air which reacts with a graphite lubricant to prevent carburization or water vapour produced by flash vaporization or an inert gas such as nitrogen which has a reducing action. In one embodiment the gaseous medium is directed on to an extruded rod 6 by one or more ring nozzles 7, Fig. 1, arranged around the rod. Alternatively, if the product is hollow, the medium can be supplied through a pressure release valve (12), (13), Fig. 2 (not shown), in an internal chamber (14) of a mandrel (9). A nozzle (11) is provided at the front of the tool to direct the fluid towards the internal surface of the product. In a similar embodiment, the gaseous medium is supplied to the end of a residue cut-off tool 16, Fig. 3, through a valve 27. The tool is guided in the container 3 by flanges 23. A ram 24 serves to open the valve prior to cut-off.
