Abstract

1,231,873. Road vehicle axles. A. W. HUNTON & CO. Ltd. 7 Oct., 1969 [9 Oct., 1968], No. 47873/68. Heading B7D. An axle for a trailer vehicle comprises stub shafts 15 welded into the ends of a channelsection beam 10 fabricated from sheet metal. The beam 10 is formed from a narrow rectangular plate of which the centre portion is pressed into a U-shaped channel 11 and the margins from integral flanges 12. A stiffening plate 13 is welded across the mouth of the channel 11 between the ends of the beam. The flanges 12 serve as axle pads and have holes 45 for receiving saddle bolts. Each stub shaft 15 has an inner portion 16 which fits snugly into the base of the channel 11, a smaller outer portion 17 which forms a journal for a wheel hub, and an annular back plate 20 welded to the junction between the portions 16, 17.
