Abstract

1,231,658. Heptenes. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 12 Jan., 1970 [14 Jan., 1969], No. 2224/69. Heading C5E. Heptenes are produced by subjecting a feed comprising propylene and iso-butylene dimer to elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a polymerization catalyst wherein dissociation of the isobutylene dimer is effected before any appreciable polymerization is allowed to take place. A preferred catalyst is phosphoric acid on a support. The retardation of polymerization may be effected by deactivation of the inlet portion of the catalyst, e.g. by absorption of a base such as NH 3 or a volatile organic amine, or by replacing the inlet portion by a cracking catalyst such as Al 2 O 3 or SiO 2 - Al 2 O 3 . The feedstook may be diluted with propane.
