Abstract

1,231,129. Fuel elements. BELGONUCLEAIRE S.A. 1 Dec., 1969 [29 Nov., 1968], No. 58614/69. Heading G6C. A porous plug for a nuclear fuel rod comprises refractory material including metallic crystals having a preferential orientation of its metallic crystals providing selective porosity and resulting from plastic deformation of the material. Crystal orientation of metallic sheet or sections may be obtained by well known operations, e.g. drawing, laminating, extrusion or a combination of one or more of these operations. The fuel rod shown in Fig. 2 has a jacket 1 filled with fuel pellets 2 and provided with a plug 3 fixed on the end of jacket 1 by a weld 4. The plug 3, made of a disc cut from a drawn rod, has porous passages represented by the arrows 5 through which fission product gases are released. A conventional filter 6 is placed between the fuel and the plug. The rod from which the disc is cut is made from Fe, Ni and Cr powders which are mixed and compacted using a relatively low pressure, e.g. about 1.5 t./cm.<SP>2</SP> to form a block of stainless steel. The block is then enclosed in a protective envelope to protect it from oxidation and converted into a rod by drawing.
