Abstract

1,034,505. Nuclear fuel. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. June 11, 1963 [June 20, 1962], No. 23261/63. Heading G6C. Nuclear fuels containing uranium and 15 to 80% by weight of plutonium are prepared by grinding a U/Pu alloy of the desired Pu content in an inert atmosphere to produce a pulverulent product which is then compressed and sintered either after mixing with another metal or solid non-metallic element, or substance, or after heating in an atmosphere comprising nitrogen or hydrogen sulphide. The other metal may be Mo, Mb, Ta, or Zr and the non-metallic element may be carbon or silicon. The reaction may be achieved in one stage, i.e. the U/Pu alloy and any additional solid material are ground directly together, or in two stages when the U/Pu alloy is ground in an inert atmosphere and then the additional material is introduced, the final step in either case being heating, compressing and sintering. In examples, mixed carbides and nitrides are formed.
