Abstract
1,230,994. Winding webs. FRASTAN (HOLLINWOOD) Ltd. 14 Nov., 1968 [2 Sept., 1967], No. 40205/67. Heading B8R. An automatic web-measuring, cutting and rolling-up machine of the type described in Specification 1,015,864 and comprising a cutting mechanism 41-45 disposed between two pairs of driven rollers 14, 17 which deliver the web 22 to a rolling-up mechanism including two pairs of rollers 23, 24 the latter pair being carried on a gate 25 adapted for automatic displacement as the diameter of the wound roll increases and for subsequent positive displacement to discharge the roll, is characterized in that the speed of the web through the machine is arranged to be high during the winding operation and low when cutting is effected, this speed and cutting cycle being automatically controlled through the medium of a measuring unit 64 (Fig. 9, not shown) driven directly or indirectly by the web. The lower roller 14 is belt driven from a shaft 13 which is coupled to a fast-drive shaft 5 by way of a first electromagnetic clutch 11 (Fig. 2, not shown) and to a slow-drive shaft 8 by way of a second electromagnetic clutch 12, the shafts 5 and 8 being driven by belts and associated gearing from a motor 3. Rollers 17 are beltdriven from rollers 14 through a free-wheeling device and themselves drive, by way of belts and gearing, the rolling-up mechanism 23, 24. The knife roller 45 of the cutting mechanism is chain-driven from the slow-drive shaft 8 through a ratchet clutch 47 (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) which, when released, causes the roller 45 to rotate one revolution and then to turn freely. The electromagnetic clutches 11, 12 and the clutch 47 are arranged for actuation by camcontrolled micro-switches associated with the measuring unit 64. In operation, assuming that the web 22 has been fed into the machine, switching-on of the motor 3 is accompanied by energization of the fast-drive clutch 11 so that the web runs through at high speed until the first micro-switch operates, whereby clutch 11 is released and the slow-drive clutch 12 is engaged, the machine thereafter operating at low speed until the second micro-switch is actuated to energize the clutch 47; the roller 45 then makes a single revolution to cut the web this cutting being followed by a momentary acceleration of the rollers 17 which are coupled through a free-wheel device to the roller 45; this momentary acceleration winds in the tail of the roll 22a which is then discharged into a collecting trough 36, the positive actuation of the gate 25 to discharge the roll being effected by a mechanism (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) operated in timed relation with the cutting operation. Low speed operation of the rollers then continues until the leading end of the next length of web 22 has entered the gate 25; the second micro-switch is then opened, the first micro-switch again closed, and high speed operation re-commenced. The web may be advanced to the machine from a constantly braked stock reel by means of an independently driven conveyer (Fig. 11, not shown), or it may be unwound from a stock reel and maintained at a constant tension by passing between a series of rollers alternate ones of which are mounted in a pivoted frame and the others in a fixed frame, the angular position taken up by the pivoted frame being dependent upon the rate of intake of the machine and controlling the rate at which the web is unwound from the stock reel.
