Abstract

1,230,827. Cutting extruded material. SCHIESSER A.G. RUBBER & RAILROAD RESEARCH. 19 Aug., 1968 [24 Aug., 1967], No. 39621/68. Headings B4B and B5A. Automatic apparatus for accurately cutting sections from a length of solid or tubular extruded material comprises a roller conveyer 21, Fig. 2, along which the length of material to be cut is passed, an electric motor 11, Fig. 1, an intermittently operable counterweighted cutting knife 18 mounted on a shaft 15 connectable via a rapidly-acting clutch 13 to the shaft of the motor 11, and a brake 16 for the shaft 15 which operates alternately with the clutch 13. Material to be cut is fed along the conveyer 21, past the then stationary knife 18 until its leading end interrupts the flow of light from a source 26 to a photo-cell 25. The photo-cell thus emits a control pulse to an electronic device which causes the brake 16 to be released, the clutch 13 to be engaged, and hence the knife 18 to be rotated and the material cut. After cutting the blade 18 operates a sensor 28, which sends a further control pulse to the electronic device which causes the clutch 13 to be disengaged, the brake 16 to be applied and hence the knife 18 to be stopped in its original position. The cut lengths are advanced by a roller conveyer 24 travelling faster than the conveyer 21. The motor 11, clutch 13, brake 16 and knife 18 are mounted on a tiltable support 6 so that the angle at which the material is cut may be varied.
