1,229,785. Grippers for transferring articles; unstacking-machines. CHLORIDE OVERSEAS Ltd. 16 Aug., 1968 [18 Aug., 1967], No. 38277/67. Headings B8C and B8H. Grippers 11, operated by a ram 12, are moved along a guide rail 20 by a ram 21 to remove billets 40 from a stack, one at a time and drop them at the point indicated by the arrow 50. When the first layer has been removed, the rail 20, which is reciprocated by a ram 32, is rotated through 90 degrees by a ram 33 and back to its original position to respectively pick up and drop each billet in the second layer, which is arranged at right angles to the first layer. Sensing devices 15 sense the individual billets in a layer and a retractable sensing member 25 senses successive layers. The grippers may be replaced by electromagnets.
