1,229,502. Ornamenting. ALLEGHENY LUDLUM STEEL CORP. 22 May, 1969 [31 May, 1968], No. 26289/69. Heading B6G. [Also in Division G5] Contrasting coloured designs on metal are produced by: (1) treating the metal to colour the metal surface, inscribing a design into the metal so the base metal is exposed through the coloured surface, and coating the inscribed and coloured metal with a heat and corrosion resistant transparent coating; (2) coating the metal with a heat and corrosion resistant transparent coating, inscribing the design into the metal through the coating so that the base metal is exposed, treating the metal to colour the exposed base metal, and coating the inscribed and coloured metal with a heat and corrosion resistant transparent coating; or (3) treating the metal to colour the metal surface, coating the coloured metal with heat and corrosion resistant transparent coating, inscribing the design into the metal through the coating and colour so as to expose the base metal, and treating the inscribed metal to colour the exposed base metal, and coating the inscribed and coloured metal with a heat and corrosion resistant transparent coating. The metal may be steel, brass, copper, aluminium, zinc, magnesium. The metal may be coloured by heating, chemical treatment, applying metal coatings by dipping, spraying or electroplating. The design may be inscribed by mechanical, chemical or electrical means. The transparent coating may be vitreous, e.g. silicates, organic, e.g. polymers of acrylic and methacrylic acids and may be applied by brushing, dipping, roller, or spraying. Preferably the coating is subsequently baked to render it sufficiently insoluble to withstand subsequent hydration. The metal may be cleaned prior to the colouring treatment or application of the coating.
