Abstract

[Also in Division B8] A fifth wheel support assembly for mounting on a fork-lift truck 1 comprises a conventional tractor fifth wheel plate 9 secured to the forks 8 on a carriage 7 raised and lowered by an hydraulic ram 6. A supporting trolley is connected to the forks 8 and has a leg 11 carrying one or a pair of castors 12 at its lower end and is pivoted at the other end on a pin 13 in a bore in the fork 8. A similar leg 11 is preferably provided on the second of the two forks 8 and the legs 11 interconnected. A shock-absorbing cylinder 14 is pivotally connected between the forward end of the forks 8, at 16, and to the legs 11. A pipe 17 hydraulically connects the cylinder 14 to the ram 6 so that any downward thrust of the load is balanced by an upward lift on the forks 8. Since the cylinder 14 takes a proportion of the load the fork-lift truck 1 is capable of supporting and manoeuvring a much greater load than its rated capacity. In operation the plate 9 is manoeuvred beneath the fifth wheel plate 3 of a semi-trailer vehicle 2 to be coupled thereto in the conventional manner.
