Abstract

1,225,495. Hypodermic syringe. A. G. WIGGINS. 11 June, 1968 [15 June, 1967], No. 27664/67. Heading A5R. A hypodermic syringe is provided with tangible graduation means to enable a blind person to draw into the syringe a correct dose. The graduation means are provided by a plurality of notches and projections spaced apart longitudinally on the piston or cylinder of the syringe and the means may be rendered audible by a spring cooperating with the notches and projections to form a click-stop arrangement. As shown in Fig. 1, notches and projections are provided on the piston rod 44 so that as the piston is moved relative to the cylinder, the relative distance moved and thus the dose drawn into the syringe, or ejected therefrom is gauged by the patient counting with his thumb nail the number of notches or projections which the piston rod has moved relative to the cylinder part. In one embodiment comprising the disposable piston part of Fig. 9 (not shown) the piston rod has four longitudinally extending ribs, each having a different number of notches. In another embodiment, the notches and projections are provided on a sleeve fitted over the piston rod and secured thereto. A stop member sleeve may be fitted on the piston rod or over said graduated sleeve. The cylinder 24 shown in Fig. 11 is provided with notches and projections 56 and 60 and spring limb 88 is secured so as to move with the piston part 22. End 90 of the limb either overlies the notches and projections to indicate the piston level, or spring- engages the notches to provide, in addition, audible graduation means. Alternatively, the notches and projections are provided on a bracket 92 and the knob 52 forms an indicator by cooperating with the notches and projections to provide the graduation means.
