Abstract

1,225,188. Telescopic umbrellas. ROSENKAIMER G.m.b.H. 12 Aug., 1968 [12 Aug., 1967], No. 38413/68. Heading A4P. In a telescopic umbrella frame comprising telescopic shaft members 2 and 3, telescopic rib members 4 and 5 hinged to a centre ring 6 and secured to stretchers 7 hinged to a slider 8, and struts 9 pivoted between a crown 10 and a point on the stretchers, the shaft members are interlocked in any of three separate positions I, II or III. The locking mechanism, Fig. 3, comprises a spring 12 inside the lower shaft members 2, having a knob 11 biassed to project through an aperture in the shaft wall. The upper shaft member 3 has three radially aligned apertures corresponding to I, II and 11, each of which can be engaged by the knob to interlock the shaft members. In position I, wherein the shaft is fully extended, the shaft members are unlocked by the slider 8 which has an inner surface 13 shaped to depress the knob into the shaft member 2. In position II, the frame is collapsed but the handle is left free, protruding from the ribs for ease of handling; in position III, the shaft is fully telescoped with the handle enclosed by the ribs. In these latter two positions, due to the shape of the knob and the relative diameters of the two shaft members, the shafts can be unlocked merely by hand pressure applied to their ends. The ribs are locked in their extended position by resilent engagement either of lateral projections on member 4 with inward bulges of the walls of member 5, which has a U-shaped cross-section, or of similar projections on member 5 with the sliding rib sleeve. The crown 10 preferably has a convex upper surface and is mounted for limited longitudinal displacement on the shaft, to avoid trapping a fold of the umbrella cover between itself and the centre ring 6, the crown having a short axial slot through which passes a mounting pin carried diametrically within the upper end of shaft member 3.
