BOTTLE CAP.
Application filed may 22,
This invention relates to caps or closures for containers and has for an object the provision of a cap which is especially adapt ed for closing a bottle, jar or other container having an opening surrounded by a flange or bead.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a cap for the purpose above stated, which may be secured in place after the manner of the usual crown seal, (as by crimping) so that the cap will be securely held in position, but which is so constructed that pressure upon the cap will cause the flange of the said cap to be disengaged from the bead so that "the cap may be easily removed without the use of an opener or other tool.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention. further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to
be hereinafter more fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an edge view of a cap constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view.
Figure 3 shows the cap in use.
Figure 4 is a view s milar to Figure 1 but showing a slightl different form of cap.
Figure 5 isa plhn view of the cap shown in Figure 4.
Fi ure 6 but 5% Referring in detail to the drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention as shown comprises a cap which is formed preferably of thin sheet metal and includes a convex or dome-shaped top 10 around which extends a flange 11, the latter being corrugated as shown and adapted to be pressed or crim ed beneath the bead 12 of a bottle 01 0t er container 13. v
The cap is provided with a diametrically is a view similar to Figure 3' owing the cap in position for removal.
1924. Serial 1%. 718,663.
disposed channelshaped grooved or depression 14:, while the flange 11 is slitted as shown at 15, the slit extending inwardly from the outer edge of the flange but terminating slightly spaced from the inner edge of the flange. The slit 15 is located in a line with the center of the groove or channel 14: and may be provided at each end of the channel as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, or at one end of the channel as at 15', in Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings. In these last mentioned figures, the cap is-provided with asubstantially squared edge 16, instead of the rounded edge shown in Figures 1, 2 and 8 of the drawings.
The cap is preferably provided with a cork or other suitable insert 17 and the said cap is crimped in place as previously stated.
-When it is desired to remove the cap, the
convex 0r dome-shaped top 10 is pressed inward as shown in Figure 6 of the drawings so as to separate the flange at the slit or slits 15 or 15', so that the flange will move away from the bead 12, whereupon the cap may be readily removed.
The invention is susceptible of various 7 changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall-within the scope of the appended claim.
"'II-l'aving described the invention what is 7 claimed 1s The combination with a container having an opening provided with a bead, a cap for 7 closing said opening havin adome-shaped top, a flange surrounding t e dome of said so cap and adapted to be crimped over said head, a diametrically disposed groove in said top andsaid flange being slit in alignment with said groove whereby to cause expansion of the flange upon inward pressure being applied to said dome-she ed top.
In testimony whereo I aflix my si nature.
